This links-style course affords the perfect combination of challenge and fun

The Waterton Lakes Golf Course is designed for all levels of golfers; however, if you’re a low handicapper, don’t be too quick to throw caution to the wind on this course—according to operations manager Wayne Hollander, it has some very tricky shots.

“We have some of the most challenging par three’s,” said Hollander. “We have a 247-yard par three and a 220-yard par three.”

The scenery also presents a challenge as it vies for the attention of golfers while they are lining up for a play.

“What makes it unique is you’re looking at some of the most breathtaking scenery in North America,” said Hollander.

The signature hole on the course is Number 4 but Hollander’s favourite hole is the one that gives him the greatest difficulty: Number 15.

“It’s the hardest hole on the course for me to par,” he said. “It’s a par four but it’s a very long par four. It is 419 yards but with the wind blowing, it can play as long as 500 yards.”

From the elevated tee box for Number 15, golfers can gaze over a beautiful valley surrounded by forest and catch a glimpse of the historic Prince of Wales Hotel in the distance.

“It’s worth it to come down and take a look,” said Hollander.

The Waterton Lakes Golf Course has a storied history. It was originally built in 1928 as a nine-hole layout and golf course architect Stanley Thompson helped design the course. Later in 1953, it was redeveloped to accommodate 18 holes. At present, the course is run by a non-profit organization whose members are volunteers and retirees. The profits are used for maintaining and upgrading the course.
