Organized into three chapters, Ready…Set…Golf! takes junior golfers through the basics of golf. Everything is covered—from dress code and sportsmanship to chip shots and course management. The book is very readable, with frequent punctuation in the form of diagrams and lists, and manages to provide an incredible amount of information in an enjoyable form.

Our book reviewer, Samara, eagerly devoured the book over the course of four days. Based on her interview, it is clear that in that time she came across a lot of new information that she understood and retained. This illustrates that Ready…Set…Golf! is well laid out, enjoyable and useful for new young golfers.

What did you like about this book?

I liked the Pssst! and Did You Know…? at the bottom of each page. (Note: Pssst! features are practice tips, etiquette reminders and other helpful hints, while Did You Know? consists of interesting bits of golf trivia.) Most of all I liked the illustrations—they were great. They helped explain things better for me.

What new things did you learn from this book?

I learned what a bogey is. I heard the word before—I think my dad may have talked about it, but I didn’t know what it meant.

I did not know about cue cards. They are used to help you keep track of your distance with each club. It would be a good thing to have at the driving range.

The person who has the lowest score wins. I have never ever kept score, but I always thought whoever had the highest score was the winner.

The shot closest to the hole goes last when they are putting into the hole. This is also part of the etiquette.

I learned about chip and pitch shots. This looks very tricky.

Comments:

My mom asked me what the best part of the book was and I told her I liked pretty much the whole book. It was very informative and I think kids my age would learn a lot about the game if they read it.
