Cranbrook

Taking shape

Shadow Mountain is one of the East Kootenay's most exciting golf communities

The new Shadow Mountain golf resort in Cranbrook is under construction. The development will feature a 19-hole championship golf course and is located just minutes from the Canadian Rockies International Airport. The facility will have a practice academy and clubhouse, and players will be treated to majestic views of the St. Mary River and surrounding area.

The golf course at Shadow Mountain is a bee hive of activity at the moment, with construction having resumed again this spring to continue the work started last fall.

The grading, shaping and irrigation on the majority of the holes has been done, and all of the ponds have been completed. The shaping of the 19th hole and practice area will be finished by early May, and the remaining irrigation will be in place by mid-May.

In particular, the large pond on the 15th hole and the pond on the second hole are now full of water and looking great.

“The water feature on the elevated tee box on No. 15 is spectacular,” said Fred Mehl, director of sales and marketing at Shadow Mountain. “It reminds me of the emerald-coloured lakes found in Banff National Park.”

Sand capping the holes on the west side of the property started in April, and the goal is to begin the seeding process in June.

“We hope to have the entire golf course seeded by the end of August,” said Mehl. “It will all be dependent on the weather.”

The sales centre, which is located on the property, will be offering tours of the development via paved cart paths.

“We thought a cart path would be an ideal way for interested buyers and the general public to see the place,” said Mehl. “We hope the tours will give everyone a stronger appreciation of the development—and the chance to see a world-class golf course being created on this wonderful site.”

Tours will be co-ordinated through the sales centre at Shadow Mountain and will commence in early May.

Shadow Mountain will have a soft opening in the fall of 2008 primarily for the media and buyers; the official opening is scheduled for June 2009.
