Olympic golf proposed

The values of golf are in line with Olympic virtue

Golf has been proposed as an Olympic sport in 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board announced on August 13th. The suggestion will go forth to the entire IOC for final consideration in Copenhagen in October.

In order to select additional sports, the IOC considers them in terms of their appeal to youth, popularity, universality, governance, respect for athletes and Olympic values.

IOC president Jacques Rogge spoke of golf’s appeal, along with rugby, which is being considered for inclusion as well.

“Golf and rugby scored high on all the criteria,” Rogge said. “They have global appeal, a geographically diverse line-up of top iconic athletes and an ethic that stresses fair play.”
